Phule Ambedkar RG Inaugural
Seminar
1.5 hrs
June 07, 2026 7:00 pm Sunday
The inaugural session of the Phule Ambedkar Reading Group opens with the most fundamental question a reading group can ask: How do we read and interpret a text? Featuring Dr Jilukara Srinivas, a literary critic, poet, and Ambedkarite public intellectual, and Prof. Prof Swathi Margeret, scholar of Dalit feminism, religion and cultural studies. Praveen Thallapalli is a scholar of the Bahujan movement and political thought. This session equips participants with tools to approach foundational Bahujan texts seriously: how to situate a text in its historical moment, how to read what is said and what is left unsaid, and what a text demands of its reader today.
Organizer
Hemanth Kumar Manda
We are first-generation scholars and development professionals working across sectors and life stages.
We are building a culture of reading and a community of exchange, a space where knowledge is not gatekept, lived experience is a legitimate starting point, and Bahujan thinkers are taken seriously. We want to engage deeply with Phule, Ambedkar, Periyar, Savitribai, and the traditions they inspired, not as historical curiosities but as guides to our everyday politics, our work, and our understanding of power.
The organisers have spent five years running a reading community within Azim Premji University, where this practice took root and grew. That space is now known as the Savitri Ambedkar Cultural Forum.
