‘Swami’ Lakshmananda Saraswati was killed on 23rd of Aug 2008, by Maoists in Kandhamal, Odisha, India. The Hindu fundamentalists blamed Christians for the killing and instigated violence against Christians. During the violence, more than 75 were killed, 5000 houses were looted and burnt 250 Christian institutions were reduced to ashes, 55000 people were displaced in their own land and several women were raped, including a nun.
It’s been five years since the communal violence unleashed against Christians in Kandhamal, Odisha. Until now, peace and justice have been denied to the victims. Very few were arrested and even they were released. On the contrary six innocent tribals, who were never part of the murder of Laxmanananda were immediately jailed and after five years they were convicted. As time passes by voices of victims are ignored and their stories are forgotten and their due justice is skewed and denied. So, in our effort to keep the memories alive and to advocate justice and peace for the victims of the violence and to conscientize the citizens of India against the politics of religious fundamentalism, the film ‘Kandhamal Unresolved’ is been made. The film looks into the present situation of Kandhamal, especially the struggles of victims, denial of justice and peace, intimidation and hate-campaign by Sangh Parivar and the relationship between the Hindu identity and Adivasi identity.
