"Going underground to look at the sky" Description: The next Sawaal-Jawaab: Conversations on Science features Prof. Amol Dighe of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai talking about neutrinos and the planned Indian Neutrino Observatory that has been given the go-ahead by the Indian government. Neutrinos are the second most abundant particles in the universe, and trillions of them pass through our body every second. They make the Sun shine, and even the Earth would not be possible without them. Given that most of them come from the sky, why do we need to go deep underground to observe them ? What does the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO), one of the largest scientific experiments in the country, plan to achieve?
