GRIZZLY MAN
103 min, 2005
Director: Werner Herzog
A devastating and heartrending take on grizzly bear activists Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard, who were killed in October of 2003 while living among grizzlies in Alaska. For thirteen consecutive summers, the American Timothy Treadwell moved to Katmai in the Alaskan Peninsula to live among the grizzly bears, with the pretext of studying and protecting them. In 2003, his girlfriend Amie Huguenard and he were surprisingly attacked and eaten by a bear.
Werner Herzog somehow accessed more than one hundred hours of footages filmed by Timothy and released this documentary, showing the life and death of Timothy Treadwell
Werner Herzog is undeniably one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, and one of the great figures of German Cinema. Many people find Herzog’s documentaries even more fascinating than his feature films.
No one has done more than Herzog to promulgate the deeper truth that every fiction film has an element of documentary, and that all documentaries are constructed fictions. Herzog’s docs show an appreciation for imagination, poetry, adventure, and most of all -- how documentaries at their best can be an expression of one artist’s vision of the world.
