A FISSURED HORIZON: THE CONTRADICTIONS OF INDIAN DEMOCRACY A Talk by Vinod K. Jose
Freedom House, a Washington DC-based monitoring group that measures democracy/authoritarianism, downgraded India in 2021 to "partly free". In 2022 it reiterated its "partly free" rating for India.
What is this condition of being partly free? It suggests both a deterioration in the institutions of democracy and yet holds out the possibility of recovery, all within the texture of persistent anxiety.
Vinod Jose, one of India's most dynamic and courageous journalists, explores the contradictions that underlie this condition -- as to what becomes visible of the strategies that seek to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra and simultaneously the rapid blooming off a decentralized resistance. The talk seeks to promote an engagement for each of us to find our role in a partly free country.
