24th Listening Post Unprepared – Exploring the great jazz pianists
The piano already had a respectable place in the musical scheme of things when jazz was born. In both classical and folk traditions, it was a solo instrument matched only by an orchestra, and it was the instrument of choice for composition. As a result, much of jazz has been built around and written on the piano. At this fortnight’s Jazz Listening Post, we take a look at the journey of the jazz piano, from ragtime and honky tonk to avant garde and contemporary. You will find the usual suspects, but be prepared for some unexpected guests too.
