25th Listening Post: Art Songs from the romantic era – Lieder and chanson

Piano, voice and sentimental poems about the nature of life. This week, let us explore art songs from the romantic period. These songs of high literary quality, acutely represented by careful music, became very popular in the 19th century and onwards. Art songs are often performed in sets or ‘song cycles’.The german version of art song – a lied (pl. lieder) and its french counterpart – the Chanson – represent not just the landscape and emotional geography of people in that time, but also is the essence of romantic ideology. Art song is a true exploration of poetry through music, immortalized by composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Poulenc, Debussy and many others.

Presented by Tejaswinee Kelkar, who is at present doing her MS at IIIT in Hyderabad. She has studied Western Classical as well as Hindustani Classical music and is locally part of the choir group the Deccan Voices.
