The bass player has an extremely important role in jazz, one that is perhaps not appreciated as much as it should. He holds on to the rhythm and the chordal structure that gives the soloists the freedom to improvise. This combination of rhythm and structure also makes bass solos in jazz a unique creative experience in musical expression. In this listening post, we look at some of the great bassists to understand their contribution to the magic of a jazz performance.
